How to downgrade to official FW 4.1 (20130428) from FW 4.2

Postby arathorn2nd » Mon Oct 28, 2013 8:30 pm

Hello everyone,

As many of you I made a big mistake upgrading to the latest 4.2 firmware that is far from stable. My device would crash every two minutes. I also tried in vain to flash the 4.1 firmware from April from http://www.rikomagic.com/en/download/download_18_1.html

Before giving up I decided to try custom firmwares. I must say I wasn't impressed, most are buggy and not updated any longer. I couldn't find one stable enough, so I decided to try one last desperate step before trashing my device. And with joy I can say I have successfully downgraded my device back to oficial firmware Rikomagic S8B Android4.1 FW (20130428) found at http://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/l8zrel

It's not rocket science, but make sure you have at least half an hour to fiddle with two different flashing processes and enough patience to deal with possible issues. I only have one device and I cannot be sure it will work on all others.

Process outline:
1. Flash a custom 4.1 rom using a developer tool that will get the device partitions back to the original layout;
2. Flash the official 4.1 firmware using the official tool;
3. Enjoy!

First step: Flashing a custom 4.1 firmware
The firmware at http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?4288-NEOTV-CR-for-MK802-IIIS-Version-1-7-Neomode is a custom version of Android 4.1.1 for the MK802IIS and is flashed by a developer tool that remake the partitions on the device. Luckily, the layout is the same of the official 4.1 firmware from April, the most stable IMHO.

1. Download the firmware at the url above and unzip it to some directory.
2. Connect your MK802IIS device, in flash mode by pressing the pin and connecting the computer USB to the OTG port. If don't have the drivers installed, they are present in the zip.
3. Proceed to RKDevelop folder and start the RKAndroidTool as administrator. It should say it found the RK device.
4. Uncheck loader, very important, the first item with checkboxes. Press run and wait till finished.
5. Disconnect the device from computer and reconnect to a TV/Monitor to make sure the firmware installed correctly, wait for boot.

Second step: Flashing official 4.1 firmware
No secrets here, just download the official Rikomagic S8B Android4.1 FW (20130428) from http://www.rikomagic.com/en/download/download_18_1.html and flash as usual.

There you go, now you have a downgraded device that might be at least usable. Have fun.

This process does not work for me. When I try to flash using Android Tool I get download failed error. When I try to use the batchtool to flash I get IDB failed.
The stick boots and runs fine just no WiFi. But that makes the stick basically useless to me.

I t doesn't work to me either! I uninstall it and install another alternative app instead. Whenever you use things, they will bust. When those items break, however, replacing or upgrading is not your only options. Downgrading can be just as reputable of an option.

It doesn't work for me either. After writing the custom firmware, the device didn't boot up. I tried few times rewriting it. No luck. So, i tried with "Rikomagic S8B Android4.1 FW (20130428)" but ended the attempts with luck.

Prior to this attempt, i tried other two upgrades. They are booting up nicely but netflix, watchespn were not working. Youtube was not playing consistently. Flashplayer with dolphin browser didn't work either. So i felt kind of the device is no more usable.

Finally i remembered i downloaded a firmware from Rikomagic after providing the serial number. (that was like a year ago, i forgot the link. I will update the post if i get it back). I tried that firmware. The device came to older version especially working far far better than the upgrades provided under 'http://www.rikomagic.com/en/download/download_18_1.html'. I just wanted to inform people that there is way to downgrade to original firmware for MK802IIIS(B) device.

Currently i dont know the link to download them. I will either find the link and update my post here or upload them in any site and provide the link.

Please stand by till then. Thanks

Hi, to downgrade the MK802 III S (B) 8GB to factory firmware, i used the 'batch_tool_driver_v_1.7_dual_core.zip' file downloaded from 'http://rikomagicusa.com/activation-downloads/' by entering the serial number of the device.
That worked for me to downgrade my MK802 III S (B) 8 GB device to factory firmware after upgrading / trying the binaries found in this page 'http://www.rikomagic.co.uk/support.html' and the method mentioned above.

Reply back if somebody needs any help.
