Picuntu home://io for MK802III + MK802IIIS

Postby andykirby » Tue Jul 16, 2013 2:44 pm

Hello Everyone,

I have decided to post a development image of Picuntu home ://io for the MK802III and MK802IIIS devices to help those wanting to get Linux up and running.

For those of you that are aware, there has been lots of development going on in various places regarding Picuntu, the worlds only Ubuntu distro dedicated to Arm devices, one particularly interesting "remix" of Picuntu (Picuntu home ://io) really got me excited.

This remix was originally put together by user JustinTimeForTea for the MK808B over at the Slatedroid forums. I have altered it to work on the MK802III and MK802IIIS It pretty much sums up where Picuntu (on the MK802III(S) is right now in one easy to flash SD card image.

Highlights Include:

Updated Mali Kernel for MK802III(S) devices
Fast, Optimised Full Xubuntu Desktop Preinstalled
MALI GPU Acceleration, preinstalled Chrome Browser is setup to take advantage of this.
Switchable 720P & 1080P screen modes in ubuntu display settings (like it should be!)
WIFI - Working on MK802III, use an external Realtek 8188 USB Wifi device on MK802IIIS
Lots of Preinstalled Apps and Games compiled for ARM. (including Quake 3 with full GPU Acceleration!)
For full details see the original Slatedroid post here:

Installation requires two steps:

WARNING
This is a test firmware for those that know what they are doing.
Flashing this firmware will erase the Android OS on your device so if you need Android then please don't install this!

1. Flash entire ROM to your MK802III or MK802IIIS using the tool below:
http://www.rikomagic.co.uk/downloads/RO ... 802III.zip

2. Flash the SD card image below to a 16GB or more SD card:
http://www.rikomagic.co.uk/downloads/pi ... k802III.7z

Usage:

MK802III
1. Insert Picuntu SD card and power on
3. Device should boot to Picuntu, enter password: 12qwaszx

MK802IIIS
1. Insert Picuntu SD card
2. Hold down recovery switch
3. Power on
4. Device should boot to Picuntu, enter password: 12qwaszx

This "remix" includes pretty much everything you are ever likely to need from a Linux system. Despite this, it still runs extremely well on the MK802III(S).
If you decide you want to go "headless" then its obviously possible to create a stripped down filesystem based on this image onto another SD card. With this setup the MK802III(S) will boot from any SD card that has a valid ARM Linux root filesystem on it. (The Linux Kernel is installed on the Flash of the device)

It's very exciting times that we can now use our devices for "real" computing beyond the constraints of a mobile operating system. I believe we are fast approaching a new ERA of computing. Now that the Quad core MK802IV is available and Picuntu development is progressing nicely it shouldn't be too long before things can get even FASTER!

Thanks to everyone that contributed to this, it was a real team effort. :D

All the best

Andy

No it doesn't include wifi and Bluetooth drivers for mk802IIIS, the Mediatek chipset is currently unsupported (I did hear rumours that someone may have got it working though).

Anyway You can just plug in a Realtek 8188 USB wifi dongle and it will work.

Hi Andy,

Could you please explain how did you create the whole image? what is the format of it? any tool-chain could be used to create / expand the whole image from/to system.img, boot.img, recovery.img ...?

Thanks in advance

Regards
Edward

Installation requires two steps:

step 1. Flash entire ROM to your MK802III or MK802IIIS using the tool below:
http://www.rikomagic.co.uk/downloads/RO ... 802III.zip

step 2. Flash the SD card image below to a 16GB or more SD card:
http://www.rikomagic.co.uk/downloads/pi ... k802III.7z

Could any body tell me,
My MK802III is flashed with the latest Rikomagic stock firmware Android 4.2 FW(20130722),( I noticed it is also rooted)
Do we still need to do Step 1?
If not, copying the "picuntu_home_mk802III.img" file to a micro sdcard and restarting the MK802III with the Micro sdcard inserted, would do the trick?
If step 1 is required, what is the reason.

Yes step 1 is required, it is necessary to do this because the linux kernel must be present in the recovery partition.

Thank you Andy for the answer
In step 1
in the README FIRST file there are 2 methods described to flash the the finley 1.4 rom onto the MK802III.

Method1- Flashing this ROM the EASY WAY with a removable SDcard!
Method2- Flashing the harder way. Using the PC based ROM flash tool.

I think I know the answer but since I am new to linux and android,
Could you confirm it must be Method 2. and
Could you confirm that at any time, the latest Rikomagic stock Android 4.2(20130722)FW can be re flashed, using the method described in their instructions.

Hi,

I bought a 16gb microSD and am having problems getting the image onto the card.

When I go to use win32 Disk Imager, I get the error message "Not enought space on disk: Size: 31116288 sectors Available: 30702592 sectors. Sector size: 512"

Any ideas on how to get this working? Should I use a different image writing software?

Thank you
