Wireless connection

My current set up is the mk802 with 1Gb running the standard Android OS that it came with, the issue I'm having is that the mk802 connects fairly easily to my wireless network however if I go to my Gmail or Google Play app it says that there is no internet connection.

Is there anything I can do to fix this or is the default Android OS just rubbish? I've installed Rikomagics Lubuntu 12.04 to an SD card which I'll try when I get home to see if that helps.
